Simulating herds, flocks and swarms

We use collective-motion models as a numerical laboratory for non-equilibrium hydrodynamics. The programme connects Vicsek- and Toner-Tu-type dynamics, boost-agnostic effective theories and quenched-disorder tests of collective flow.

Research questions

What we are trying to understand

How do thermodynamic and symmetry constraints restrict effective theories of flocking matter?
Which steady states and interfaces survive beyond mean-field descriptions?
How robust are predicted scaling relations when microscopic alignment rules are disordered or quenched?

Programme strands

What is currently in this programme

  • Boost-agnostic hydrodynamic constraints on flocking
  • Quenched Vicsek tests and disorder
  • Collective-motion simulations and scaling

Why it matters

Impact and connections

The same mathematical structures appear in biological swarms, active materials and traffic-like flows. Collective motion therefore provides a concrete arena in which to test how symmetry, fluctuations and disorder shape non-equilibrium phases.
