Holographic driven steady states
Abstract
We ask when hydrodynamics can describe slow, long-wavelength fluctuations around an electrically driven non-equilibrium steady state. When the first non-hydrodynamic excitation relaxes parametrically slowly, it must be retained as an additional gapped mode, leading to a relaxed hydrodynamic theory. Gauge-gravity duality then provides a controlled ultraviolet-complete example in which the steady state and its fluctuations can be computed explicitly, giving a concrete test of hydrodynamics beyond thermal equilibrium.
