Abstract

Strong electrostatic fields can weaken superconductivity in metallic BCS thin films even though ordinary screening arguments suggest that static electric fields should have little effect. A microscopic route to this behaviour follows from the analogy between Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticles and relativistic Dirac fermions: sufficiently strong electric fields can excite quasiparticle pairs from the superconducting condensate, while related effective descriptions predict a field-driven suppression of the superconducting gap and, at strong enough fields, a transition toward the normal state. The programme connects this microscopic picture to experimentally accessible observables in gated superconducting films.
